Julian Dowle !!!!!
Sean,
I have never heard of him! and I watch every gardening TV programme and
read lots of magazines etc etc!

Certainly not one of the top echelon of designers. Just hope you don't get
one of those daft desiners who think they can swap interior designs to
gardens,. Gardens without plants as their starting point I think are pretty
souless.

Over the past couple of years there has been a move in the garden media to
encourage us in England to loook at plantings in gardens abroad and widen
our horizons and adopt the techniques and the styles we see. Dan Pearson
gave us programmes on oriental gardens as well as others about gardening
with native species in the PNW. Lots about contemporaray continental stiff
like Piet Oudolf and his creative management of perennilas. Much as I adore
cottage gardens (and hence my praise for the plantings I saw in cannon
Beach in Oregon we are) there is a lot more going on over here than people
give us credit for!

Out top garedning TV programme is currently featuring Stephen Lacey, one
our foremost gardening writers/ pundits, doing a tour of Californian
gardens and telling us all over this side of the pond just how much we
could learn from them. quite right too!
It must be awful to have the UK pushed down your throats all the time even
tho we do have some pretty nice gardens!

PS I am coing to California in the summer, San Diego up Hwy 1 to San
Francisco. I hope there are some kind people out there who can suggest some
horticulural highlights for me to see always remembering that "him indoors"
:-) has a low threshold of tolerance for plants.

Once again I am indebted to this list for help ing me with my holiday plans
:-)
