Re: Celmesias

Colette: Just to reinforce Dave's message - any time from late-ish
spring on for flowering, depending on particular sp and on soil and
climate - and to bring out the implication in his message that, tho'
there are certainly many splendid collections of celmisias in Ireland
(Gary Dunlop at Ballrogan - see Plant Finder, where you'll see dozens
of spp offered only by him - has one of the best: and his prices are
as sensible as his plants are outstanding), there's no NEED to go that
far to see them (tho' I understand the feeling that any excuse to go
to Ireland is a GOOD excuse...!). Nor do you need necessarily to go
south and west to Devon and Cornwall. There are some splendid shows of
them in the north as well. Logan and Inverewe both have lots. A
magnificent garden in Cumbria with an outstanding specialist
collection of celmisias is that of Dr Hugh Barr at Beauhill, Penrith.
He isn't often - though he is sometimes - open to the public but he's
in the telephone book and if you were up this way and rang in advance,
explaining your growing passion for NZ daisies! I'm sure he'd be happy
to have you visit. He's a charming man: a real enthusiast. A good
nursery up here at which to buy'em (not cheap but good quality) and a
nice place to visit is Eggleston Hall, Castle Barnard, Co Durham. And
don't think that the big C. coriacea is the only one worth fussing
with. Many of the smaller alpine species are absolutely splendid for a
scree bed or a trough.

I suddenly remember that there's a (female) enthusiast for the genus
somewhere near you, with a considerable collection I believe. Her name
is Anne someone - I've forgotten her surname but she's a leading
member of the area group of the AGS so if you get in touch with them
I'm sure they'll be able to put you in touch with HER. In case it
helps with ID, her husband is a species rhododendron addict, poor
soul.) I've only exchanged info. with her by letter, I haven't met
her, but she seemed very friendly and interested and knowledgeable.
