Re: Loquat 'childhood memories'

Interesting that Kurt Mize should write that the loquat fruit is
attractive
to children. My aunt spent her early childhood in S. Africa and often
spoke of the loquat trees lining the street they lived on in Pretoria.
Although she left there in 1908 at the age of eight, she had vivid
memories of the the seeds of the loquat and how they sucked the
pulp off the 'stone' inside. She remembered their fascination with
the 'stone' separating into three separate seeds and how they
could fit them together again, like a child's interlocking puzzle game.
Loquats are available in the nurseries here on Vancouver Island
so must survive in our Zone 8 cool Medit climate but I have yet to
acquire one myself.
