Remembering this time last year the spectacular flower
season of Bauhinia purpurea and B. variegata in March
and April in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, leads me to wonder
if any of the tree species are being grown succesfully
here in northern California/SF Bay Area? It would
appear that for the two I've listed, we either are too
cool in spring, too cold in winter, or get
insufficient summer heat to get a good show. B. x
Blakeana is another variety that I don't see around
here. I'd also be interested in member's experience
with B. forficata, B. punctata, B. tomentosa in cooler
mediterranean climates such as the San Francisco Bay
area, USDA Zones 9a/9b/10a.
One last note on Bauhinia, I saw a beautiful scandent
shrub/large vine species called B. kochiana while in
Malaysia last year, with an orange red flower cluster
which is very similar to Sarraca tree(also a SE Asian
species). I haven't found a reference for this in any
books I have, including books on SE Asian plants I
purchased while on this same trip. Is anyone growing this?
