Bauhinia kockiana is described in Herklots, Flowering Tropical Climbers. He
says that "The flowers are produced in quite large corymbose racemes. When
they open they are light golden yellow, the petals with red stalks; as they
get older the veins of the petals become red which colour diffuses outwards
until the whole of the flower is a rich deep orange-scarlet. There are
three fertile and five sterile stamens. By the time the colour change is
complete the stamens have withered. Flowers of different colours may be
seen in the same bunch." It was first collected about 1840 in Sumatra.

One last note on Bauhinia, I saw a beautiful scandent
shrub/large vine species called B. kochiana while in
Malaysia last year, with an orange red flower cluster
which is very similar to Sarraca tree(also a SE Asian
species). I haven't found a reference for this in any
books I have, including books on SE Asian plants I
purchased while on this same trip. Is anyone growing this?
