For my studies of Swertia albomarginata, I have used a
chicken band on a fiberglass stake. You get a small,
fairly unobtrusive stake with a number and a color,
that you can then look up in your notebook. Some of
the stakes have been in the field (Mojave Desert!)
five full years and the numbers remain very readable.
