Charles -

Did you have a change to visit La Mortella, on Isola d'Ischia, the island
in the northern part of the Bay of Naples? This was right in your
neighborhood, and certainl would have been worth the trip. Lady Susana
Walton's tropcal fantasy would have been of interest to you, full of
bromeliads, ferns, rare and unusual trees, interesting fountains and rills
of water. It has become a favorite destination for Europeans, especially
German tourists. You can 'hang out' in the garden as long as you wish, and
people often bring a book and do just that. There is a small cafe which
plays Sir Willam Walton's music throughout the day and there are various
live performances by young musicians most weekends (no extra charge). The
paths wander throughout the gardens, up the cliff behind where there are
some striking views of the island's mountain, Mt. Epomeo, another extinct
volcano, as well as the Mediterranean beach close at hand (within walking
distance from the garden). During the time Deborah and I were there we
thought we'd died and gone to heaven - such a lovely place and so easy to
relax!
