Hi, Joe. It sounds like you might have Ruellia Brittoniana, the misnamed Mexican Petunia. It's a perennial (or evergreen, in mild climates) herbaceous plant, and is a vigorous spreader, given the right conditions (moist soil). I've heard it can be a weedy pest in the deep South. I mistakenly thought it was a Solanum, myself, before I keyed it out. I have it in my garden, where it makes a mound of upright branches 3-4 feet tall and covers itself with violet blue flowers over a long period in the summer. It likes sun, though, and is a shy flowerer in a shady position.
