Re: Serissa foetida

Dear Mark,

I'm in the Los Angeles area, Zone 9, Sunset Zone 21, and have had a double
flowered white form of serissa foetida as a potted plant on my patio for
several years. It's in a 12 inch pot and is about 2 1/2 feet tall by as
wide. It gets rather gawky-looking, so I prune it for shape and to remove
dead branches in late spring. It flowers most of the year, as I recall.
The coldest it gets here is in the low 40's on average. Maybe we get a day
or two of mid 30 weather in some years.

I've also seen it as a tiny bonsai plant.

I have just been reading about serissa in my American Horticultural Society
A-Z Encyclopedia, because I'm thinking of finally putting it in the ground.
(Re-evaluating all potted plants, since summer is coming and I want to
travel). They say to use it as a hedge plant, or in a border, or at the
base of a house in warmer climates. They suggest growing it under glass if
your weather gets below 45 degrees F, (7 degrees C). They also say to
protect it from cold, drying winds and to water sparingly in winter. In
southern California, we haven't been as fortunate as our northern California
neighbors regarding winter rains. We didn't get much winter rain at all
this year, so that hasn't been a problem. At least for the serissa.

P. S. Can you suggest good gardens to visit in the Cornwall area? (Remember
I said I was hoping to travel?) Will be visiting a sister newly living in
Kent, and we will be spending a week in Bude. Late May, early June. Thanks
in advance for any suggestions.
