Lawn Substitutes

St. Aug. grass as we have in the SF Bay Area is Stenotaphram
secundatum--heavy stoloniferous drought tolerant--warm season only. It can
form a mat 12 to 18 inches deep if not kept mowed and will run over any
edging you can name. It is very coarse textured. It needs unflagging
maintanence!

Kikuyu is Pennisetum clandestinum--same description as above except it has
very deep roots and runs very fast and far--not unlike bamboo. Brown during
cold winters. Stays green with almost no water. Very hard to get rid of.

It is found everywhere here. I have seen it run up trees and power poles.
These plants are no bargain.

Buffaloe and Mosquito grass are better, but they are not a rich green. More
of a pale grey green--not the lushness of a lawn.

How about Carex tumicola. It is lush green--6-8 inches tall-clumping easy
to have flowers in between, gives lush lawnlike effect.
