Trimming heliconia

Please excuse the cross-posting....
My heliconia plants suffered badly in this past winters freeze and I have
waited to trim off the burnt growth. New growth is now coming out and I am
wondering if it is safe to cut down the burnt stuff and how far back I
should cut it when I do
