Nan,
I live in Berkeley and have several of these growing on the east side
of my house in partial shade. They do very well, and color up nicely
in the late fall even though we seldom have any frost. Now that
they're a couple of years old, I hardly ever even give them any
supplemental water, and they still do ok. They haven't grown as fast
as the books all say they will (up to a foot per year) but maybe it's
because I don't water them much.
I do miss the many other hydrangeas (like petiolara) that grow so
beautifully on the east coast.
