Kay, I think your recommendation is a good one for Eriogonum giganteum--I
planted one in late October 1997, in my front yard here in San Jose,
California. From the spindly little 1 gallon plant grew this large, 4 foot
tall bush with billowing flower, blue-white leaves, and interesting peeling
reddish bark.
I've got a picture of it from last summer, all of ten months after it was
planted, at http://www.marmot.net/danm/flora/fy/98/aug.html. This year it's
grown a bit taller and wider. The blooms lasted a real long time, from mid
June through mid October, when they turned brown rather suddenly and were
cut off. The plant also attracts a good amount of what look to me like
native bees and certainly small butterflies.
The only hesitation I would have with the recommendation is with watering--I
didn't water the Eriogonum at all during the summer, and I would certainly
think that Crambe cordifolia would want a good amount.
