You are actually fortunate in being located in the Mediterranean basin.
We've talked about the Mediterranean Garden Society whose headquarters is
located in Sparoza, Greece. There is a splendid garden Located there that
would certainly provide inspiration as well as plant material for you. As
a member of the MGS, you can also avail yourself of a service where a
couple of members have tracked down who has what where in the Mediterranean
area, so if you are looking for a specific plant, these people can help
you out. There are also the largest number of MGS members in Greece at
this time, so you could certainly find many people to talk with, trade with,
etc.
If you need another MGS membership form, check on this web page:
http://www.support.net/Medit-Plants/groups/mgs.html
(follow the link entitled 'how to join').
Last year, I sent a letter to the editor of the MGS Journal (a quarterly
publication), asking for information about a couple of Mediterranean
plants I am researching, which they printed in the next issue. Just
this week, in addition to other useful and interesting responses,
I have received correspondence from a member on Malta telling me about a
new (to me) plant related to those I mentioned. I am very excited about
the possibility of trialing this plant in California where it is yet
unknown! It shows real promise in Malta which isn't surprizing since it
is endemic there. So, even those of us in the 'land of plenty' of plants
can find something to get excited about in our participation with the
MGS! I encourage you to join a.s.a.p.!
