I think that you can get seed of many natives here in
California, mail order, from several sources, but I
have no idea how easy or difficult seed of Ceanothus
and Arctostaphylos might be to germinate. A couple of
California sources have been mentioned here on line,
among them Jinny Hunt at Seedhunt.com, the Theodore
Payne Foundtion, 10459 Tuxford St., Sun Valley, Ca.
91352 in Southern California, the Clyde Robin Seed
Company,P.O. Box 2855, Castro Valley, Ca. 94546, Las
Pilitas Nursery, Star Route Box 23, Santa Margarita,
Ca. 93453 and several others. The book by Glenn
Keator- Complete Guide to the Native Perennials of
California, ISBN 0-87701-699-2, list many more, and
might serve as a good reference. As I don't deal much
with seed, but generally only with live plants, I
don't have the e-mail addresses right at hand.
I know that you could probably find European, or at
least English sources of many of these plants using
the English published plant location service-"Plant
Finder", and that the English do grow many of our
natives, such as Carpenteria, Romneya, Sidalcea, and
Fremontodendron, to name a few.
I'd also guess that you would have better luck with
species from southern California than northern, as
your part of Greece is much drier and hotter than
coastal California, and a lot of the more northerly
species might need summer water in your area. There
are also several nurseries in the mediterannean that
have members on this list, and might be able to direct
you to local sources. You could do a search from past
summarized listings by going to
www.mallorn.com/lists/medit-plants, and get listings.
I wish you good luck with your plant hunting, and I
remember seeing alot of our natives at Kew Gardens
this summer, both in the cool temperate green house,
and outdoors near this green house. I am sure there
are other closer gardens as well.
Regards,
David Feix
