I recently came across this web site,
(http://www.plantzafrica.com) for the National Botanic
Institute of South Africa, and was fascinated by the
mentions of some plants that none of my reference
books on South African plants even mention. I
certainly didn't know that there were so many other
Cussonia species in South Africa, beyond the two that
are to be found in the trade here, (C. paniculata and
C. spicata). A most interesting site, and makes me
want to join so I can get the Flora and Veld
quarterly, a whole new world opens up!
Also, I came across a white flowering Amararanthus
family member native to Natal and the east coast that
looks beautiful, and is said to be easily grown at
Kirstenbosch, Aerva leucura. (See site reference at
http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantab/aervaleucura.htm),
for photo and description. Is anyone else growing
this plant in a mediterranean climate? The web site
suggests growing this along with Hypoestes
aristata-Ribbon Flower, which is something I already
do grow and is blooming now, along with something
called Vernonia glabra, which I don't know. I'd love
to hear from anyone growing these. Plants from South
Africa's subtropical east coast are not strictly
mediterranean, but so many of our common ornamentals
in California come from there, and are often amazingly
drought tolerant given the difference in rainfall
patterns.

David Feix
