Like Tim and Bleddyn, I have both forms here, the straight form from Tim, and vestita from Bleddyn. (BTW, Tim, these were seedlings, not cuttings.) Both of mine are growing well, though not anything like as well as they are with Tim, and almost certainly because, in the case of vestita I've given it too sharp drainage and too sunny a position; and in the case of C.coccinea itself, although it's grown much better this year than before, it's got too much competition for root-space from such things as Acacia dealbata, Melaleuca squarrosa and Iochroma australe. I keep meaning to do something about it...

I noticed, the last time I visited Bleddyn and Sue Wynne Jones's Crug Nursery, in September, that their mouthwateringly impressive specimen only had a very few flower heads open. Last year it was a magnificent spectacle. Ah well, I'm sure that next year will be very different. But I agree with Tim that this plant is well worth any amount of trouble to grow well - it's a class act.
