Luculia

Dear Michael

I was interested to read about your experience of growing Luculia as it
differs so much from my own. I don't have phytophera in my soil (or not to
my knowledge - I haven't had it tested) - but given that it spreads in the
soil via water and that Luculia is sensitive to it - I can understand why
you would keep it dry.

My experience is that Luculia will tolerate dryness but does better with
moisture. Out of curiosity I had a look at a few books and they all
suggested free draining moisture retentive soil.

However, your note started me wondering whether there are other factors
also at work to explain our different experiences? My garden soil is very
sandy and well drained - I apply enormous amounts of compost every year but
it disappears quickly (I'm told that watering in clay particles may help
the soil form aggregates and retain the organic matter better but I haven't
tried this yet) - and Melbourne's climate tends to be dry during the summer
- certainly it is fairly rare to be able to describe Melbourne as humid.
I'm not sure where Erina is or what type of climate or soil that you might
have? It would be interesting to compare our garden conditions.
