Fig lore

Two cents worth of Greek folklore:
You must NEVER fall asleep in the enticingly dense shade of a
fig-tree... it will rob you of your faculties as you sleep and you might
wake up insane or moronic....
Obviously people always had strong feelings about the tree.
Extra tid-bit:
In Corfu we make a paste of chopped dried figs plenty of black pepper
and ouzo, shape it into patties about one inch thick and 5.5" in
circumference) wrap them in vineleaves held into place with string, and
use throughout the winter as accompaniment for an aperitif. I must
admit it's something of an aquired taste. It's called "Sykomadhia," or
"sykopita" (syko=fig).

PS. I apologise for the name-confusion. When in NY I use my husband's
e-mail address. He is Edward Malefakis of Columbia University.
