Hi Wendy,

Just one warning, which may not apply in your area. People around here
who stock small ponds with fish find that this attracts herons and/or
kingfishers, and these can rapidly help themselves to all your poor
fish! TYhese birds will come right into the suburbs if they find that
there is something there to interest them. Some cats are also adept at
"fishing".
There is no easy solution to this that I know of. Some people cover the
whole pond with a chickenwire cover. Effective, but spoils the
appearance. Providing underwater "ledges" that the fish can hide under
may help, but is not a complete solution.
