There's a saying about "shooting fish in a barrel", but I'd hardly expect
kingfishers to dive into a whiskey barrel. Much more likely is predation
by racoons, cats, and other mammals...
The great virtue of mosquito fish [Gambusia] is that they are too small or
too cryptically colored to attract herons and roacoons. I tried goldfish
and juvenile carp in my small garden pond and had racoons in the pond
every night, before a heron put an end to the project. After going to
Gambusia, there've been no such incursions.
Also, a small container can be subject to great swings in water
temperature. Gambusia tolerate these changes in temperature very well.
