One suggestion for someone looking for native plants is to go to the
local California Native Plant Society chapter's plant sale. Unfortunately,
most of the fall sales have already been held by now. My chapter (Santa
Clara Valley) does have both a spring sale (2 days) and a fall sale, and we
do advertise with posters and listings in journals like Pacific Horticulture
and local newspapers and the like. Usually these sales have volunteers
ready to help someone pick a plant for that problem corner, or advise what
would go on the hill in back of the house, or whatever. Fall is the
better time to plant here for natives.
Both the arboretums at UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz have plants for sale
by their gift shops. Another good place in Berkeley is the native plant
section of Berkeley Horticultural Nursery, in Berkeley on McGee.
Another good way to acquire and learn about native plants to join the
state's native plant society, if there is one. (Cyndi, I assume you
live in the Bay area; contact me if you want more info. on a local chapter
and how to reach them.) Hope this helps.
