Re: Planting something native

One suggestion for someone looking for native plants is to go to the
local California Native Plant Society chapter's plant sale. Unfortunately,
most of the fall sales have already been held by now. My chapter (Santa

That's frustrating...I've been keeping my eyes peeled for announcements.
If they aren't here or in ba.gardens then where? What other sales or
exchanges are coming up besides CRFG in January?

Clara Valley) does have both a spring sale (2 days) and a fall sale, and we
do advertise with posters and listings in journals like Pacific Horticulture
and local newspapers and the like. Usually these sales have volunteers
ready to help someone pick a plant for that problem corner, or advise what
would go on the hill in back of the house, or whatever. Fall is the
better time to plant here for natives.

It's still fall! I'm still planting.

Both the arboretums at UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz have plants for sale
by their gift shops. Another good place in Berkeley is the native plant
section of Berkeley Horticultural Nursery, in Berkeley on McGee.

Thanks. I do go to the Berkeley Hort but they are pretty expensive. Very
high quality plants though. I just blew most of my plant budget on an
avocado tree (not native or Medit, I know! but I had to have one). I have
trouble there cause they're on a slight hill and most of their plants are
in gravel. So I really can't do any browsing. I did just find a stevia
plant there which was cool (also not native :-)).

Another good way to acquire and learn about native plants to join the
state's native plant society, if there is one. (Cyndi, I assume you
live in the Bay area; contact me if you want more info. on a local chapter
and how to reach them.) Hope this helps.

Oakland. Please do send me info.

Thanks for your comments!
