As part of the 1998 Australian Garden Lecture Series Dan Hinkley from
Heronswood Nursery (Seattle) spoke last weekend on "Autumn Blossoming
Perennials" and "Plant Marriages, Flowers and Foliage".
The slides that he used were from his own garden and some of his
suggestions were both innovative and inspiring. I quite envy those on
the medit-plants list with access to his nursery - wow!
Many of the ideas require a cooler/wetter environment than many
mediterranean gardeners experience but not all - for instance:
Geranium x oxonianum "Thrustonianum" growing up through Rosa glauca with
the flowers of the geranium mimicking the rose flowers throughout the
summer (if anyone knows a seed source for this geranium I would be
interested - even though it probably would not come true from seed you
might get something similar)
or
Yucca filamentosa "Variegata', Origanum vulgare and Cerinthe major
'Purpurascens'
or
Cotinus coggygria 'Atropurpurea', Eryngium giganteum and Tropaeolum
speciosum
There were many other ideas and I won't go on about them - but well
worth listening to! Did anybody else catch him while he was in
Australia?
(ps - he showed a slide of local black slugs which appeared huge - are
they for real?? - I take back everything I have said about my slugs
presenting a problem!)
Also, somebody asked about 'Botanica' - I have it and think that it is a
good, reliable and pretty comprehensive general reference - the only
criticism is the weight - I find it too heavy to just hold and read - I
have to place it on a table - but a relatively minor problem. Well worth
purchasing.
