North American Cottage Gardening Society forming

Call me crazy, but I am in the process of organizing a not-for-profit
North American Cottage Garden Society, which I hope will do for
gardeners in this continent what the Cottage Garden Society does for
gardeners in Britain. For those of you who dont know, I am a garden
writer and editor formerly associated with the now-canceled American
Cottage Gardener magazine. When I was told by the publishers that the
magazine was going to be canceled, I was alarmed that its demise would
leave North Americans interested in cottage gardening nowhere to turn
for reliable information on the subject. So I proposed to the publishers
that they announce in their final issue that subscribers interested in
continuing their exploration of cottage gardening write to me and let me
know. It also occurred to me that some of you out there might be
interested as well.

The Society’s purpose will be to provide North American gardeners with a
forum for exploring the classic English cottage gardening style of home
horticulture and adapting it to North American climate conditions and
cultivars. The Society will be publishing a 12-page journal four times
yearly, containing articles on cottage gardening and cottage garden
plants. Once a year, in the Winter or Spring Issue, we will offer seeds
of plants suitable for North American cottage gardening, many of them
donated by members, some of them purchased by the Society especially for
the occasion.

One year membership in the Society will probably cost $15 for U.S.
residents; $18 for residents of Canada and Mexico; and $20 for residents
elsewhere, all in U.S. funds, payable by money order or check drawn on a
U.S. bank.

Would you like me to let you know when this project gets off the ground?
If so, please do not send me any money now. I’ll contact you via email
as soon as I get the go-ahead.
