Pomegranates....
My Grandmother grew a shrubby one in her garden in San Jose, California which
bore fruit every Autumn. It was one of the big treats of my childhood. We
watched the fruits develop over the summer asking on every visit "are they ripe
yet?". She would take us out and carefully inspect every fruit (it was a small
plant) and then one magical day she would say "They're ready now!" and out we
trooped, she with pruners in hand , and we each got one.
As for beverages, a popular drink of my ill-spent California youth was a Tequila
Sunrise composed of grenadine, orange juice, and of course Tequila, in layers
which one stirred together just before drinking it.
