Re: Compost

Dear Gunnar,

I have been living in Greece for ten years and have never seen any native gardener use compost, let alone mulch (except in cases of neglect!)  Nevertheless,  gardens here  seem to have such an overabundant crowded appearance, don't they?  Can anyone explain this?  The only attempts at conditioning soil I've noticed is burning down to the ground or adding manure.  And the only differentiation people seem to make about soils is whether it's red, chestnut or black.  Not too much awareness of acidity, even in garden centers.  We are gardening in a different world!

Good morning / evening,Do you all have composts? I have recently moved to Greece and have been trying to start one. However, I get so many cockroaches in the compost that I am thinking of discontinuing. It is a closed compost so animals shouldn't be able to get in, but  it seems impossible to make it tight enough. Would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this! Gunnar DathKoroniGreece
