If it is deep enough (about 1 meter) with enough green, unrotted
material, such as grass clippings, it will generate enough heat from
decomposition to kill any insects. Insects (in California, we get
sowbugs, which eat the decaying matter will not hurt it, but then, if
they are cockroaches, you will not want it against the house. Keeping
it covered with plastic, and putting it in the sun, will increase the
heat (and keep moisture in). Some organic gardening purists would say
not to cover it, but if it is not hot enough, or dries out too fast, the
plastic will help.
