>From: Michael Barclay <opga@wenet.net> > As I mentioned I have been growing an "unknown" Brachychiton which I > bought at San Marcos for 18 years. It came labelled B. diversifolia. > Is that a valid name? Michael, Brachychiton diversifolius (formerly Sterculea diversifolia) is now known as Brachychiton populneus. It is the "Kurrajong" bottle tree native to Queensland and New South Wales. It has large clusters of one-inch creamy yellow bell-shaped flowers and boat-shaped woody pods about 3 in. long. It starts out quite vertical in form, with lobed leaves of at least three different shapes (the source of its name) and matures to a handsome, dome-shaped tree 40-45 ft. tall. It is widely used as a street tree in southern California and sometimes as a lawn tree. It has a deep root system that doesn't bother concrete or get into pipes. For more complete information and good pictures, see Bob Perry's book, Landscape Plants for Western Regions, p. 104. John MacGregor jonivy@earthlink.net |
