Michael,

Brachychiton diversifolius (formerly Sterculea diversifolia) is now known as
Brachychiton populneus.  It is the "Kurrajong" bottle tree native to
Queensland and New South Wales.  It has large clusters of one-inch creamy
yellow bell-shaped flowers and boat-shaped woody pods about 3 in.  long.  It
starts out quite vertical in form, with lobed leaves of at least three
different shapes (the source of its name) and matures to a handsome,
dome-shaped tree 40-45 ft. tall.  It is widely used as a street tree in
southern California and sometimes as a lawn tree.  It has a deep root system
that doesn't bother concrete or get into pipes.  For more complete
information and good pictures, see Bob Perry's book, Landscape Plants for
Western Regions, p. 104.
