Re: Aristea and Wachendorfia

Tim and Glenn,

Wachendorfia and Aristea major do just fine here in
San Francisco without heat, both are growing and
blooming quite well in Strybing Arboretum in sandy
soil and rather cool growing conditions, summer days
are rarely even 70F, and probably average 55-65F.
Strybing Arboretum is in the middle of our fog belt,
so generally stays quite cool through out the year.

I have also had Wachendorfia do quite well in my own
garden and client's gardens in a fair amount of
shade,(late afternoon sun only), and never really gave
it all that much water. I have noticed though that it
grows much more vigorously with regular irrigation and
in more moisture retentive, clay soils, but also seems
to be able to tolerate deep but infrequent watering in
northern California. In our area, it verges on being
a weed, and needs sufficient space or it will takeover
from surrounding plantings. It will get burned back
to the roots in a heavy frost.
