Y'all who suggested oak moth caterpillars are correct.
I took a look at a tree here in campus that was
similarly affected (totally defoliated). I saw
remnants of chewed leaves, and the twigs were still
green inside. I could also see the frass under the
tree. One tree which had not been totally defoliated
had the characteristic striped caterpillars on it
still.
The only untouched parts are the acorns. still green
and still on the tree.
