RE: propogating Ceanothus

Hi Margaret,

I'm not clear where you live...since you said the plants are flowering madly, are you by chance in the Southern Hemisphere?

My favorite propagation book (Geoff Bryant's Propagation Handbook: Basic Techniques for Gardeners) suggests soft or semihard cuttings, Summer-Autumn. Cuttings take 25-50 days to strike, and there's a 75% strike rate. I haven't taken ceanothus cuttings myself, so I would be interested in hearing how other Medit Planters have done.

Subject: propogating Ceanothus

While I am still in the depths of darkness with respect to designing my garden - well its two steps forward one step back and today was a big step back so I'm being negative - I am trying to produce as much plant material as I can from what remains of my previous attempts at horticulture. I have two varieties of Ceanothus which are both flowering madly at the moment and I am wondering if it is better to try and raise seedlings or take cuttings? Any suggestions? If I take cuttings are they spring things, ie semi soft wood, or autumn, ie hardened tips?
