Susan:

The first thing I  do when  I receive a post likw yours is make a beeline
for William T. Stern's Botanical Latin, now published by Timber Press.  I
can hardly think of a more valuable botanic reference, or at least, a more
frequently used one.  

Discovering the Greek or Latin stem meanings has often helped me to infer
useful info about a plant, or create a mental image I can use to link the
name to theplant I experience.
