Re: Ants , slugs and slaters

Wow, interesting ants you have. THose black ones we call "argentine
ants" supposedly these are from argentina. Harmless to people but quite
annoying (if you leave any crumbs around theyll be sure to follow,
especially of its rainy weather outside). Here in Monterey we have i
think 20 - 40 species of ants (somewhere in there, i forget the
specific numbers!). Never seen any really "dangerrous" ants, but
supposedly the velvet ants (they have a reddish brown furry body) give
nasty bites! Those are solitary and ive never seen them around here. We
do have red ants and those are painful. the black ants do leave scent
trails behind, this is so the workers can find where the scouts found
the food. all i do to make sure the ants dont come in is make sure
there is nothing sweet or oily laying around (such things like dirty
forks and plates). Ive left empty soda cans in my room and the next
morning had ants all over it. When i threw it away, the ants left.

As to slaters, what are they? Ive never heard of those, but what do
they look like?

I havent seen any slugs in my garden. Lots of snails but right now
there isnt any plants that they love to eat (my dietes gets chewed but
no major damage). I found out an interesting thing about the garden
snails here, supposedly french settlers brought them over to eat. THey
got loose, so, the snails we have are the culinary types!
