autumn color

No expert here on fall/autumn color. But what about the beautiful Vitis
family? At this moment, October 6, near the Pacific Ocean, 85 mi south of
San Francisco, I have a vine atop the rose pergola that is flaunting
beautiful, big leaves that are intense red.Friends warned me to be careful,
but so far it has behaved itself. If the weather is right and we have a cold
snap before the leaves fall off, the acer palmatums (I have 3 kinds) will
put on a great display of colors. Then there are the wild roses: R.
cinnamomea, R. virginiana, R. bella, as well as some old roses like 'Francis
E. Lester' whose foliage is always beautiful. To say nothing of the rose
hips....all the species and many of the hybrid climbers in the wichurana and
multiflora group. Brugmansias are blooming now, some 8 ft. high with apricot
blooms...lovely.
