Gomphostigma is a South African genus in the Loganiaceae (the family
which includes Buddleja). Based on your description, it sounds like
you've got G. virgatum, a shrub of rocky streambeds which grows to 3-5'
tall, with an almost equal width, eventually. In spite of its
appearance, I seems to need a steady supply of moisture - that's been my
experience in E. NC, in any case.
