I have no personal experience of clematis in a mediterranean climate
apart from two wild types that are found here but in the excellent book
by Pierre Cuche "Plantes du Midi" the following species are recommended
for THE mediterranean climate:-
C. armandii cream, evergreen, perfumed?
C. a. "Apple Blossom"
C. a. "Snow Drift"
C. flammula white,herbacious
C. viticella various
C. x Jackmanii violet
C. montana pink etc.
C. texensis bright pink + hybrids
For all it is is necessary to plant in a soil with plenty of humus, to
protect the roots from the sun but to let the stems reach the sunshine
and to apply a good covering of well rotted compost or manure each year
