Thanks for your input too. I agree completely with you that culture and
environment count, that U.S. (particularly California) gardens are renovated
often before plants reach maturity, and that there is no one answer. Even
the 'experts' differ.
I am finding bits here and there. The September 2000 Newsletter of the Milo
Baker Chapter of CNPS talks about saliva lifespans a bit. See

Any orchardists out there who might know fruit tree lifespans? Apples and
stone fruits?
I'll keep on searching and gleaning.
