Re: rats in my fig!

We have fruit rats here in my Upland neighborhood as well. They run from
garden to garden along the wooden fences then climb into the fruit trees
for a seasonal feast when each is ripe. I try to keep my citrus trees
pruned away from the fence to deter them +and+ the ants. But every year
I find a few hollow tangerines and oranges. And, now that I'm
espalliering a fig along the fence, I suppose I'll have them there as
well!

I liked Jane's suggestion of a Rat Zapper that she got at Granger's
(near you). I'm going to be on the lookout for that.

The sheet metal idea from Glenn would work. I've seen many a palm tree
trunk wraped in it for just such a purpose. But, as others have pointed
out, you must keep the fig tree pruned away from any other and from any
structure. The Rat Zapper sounds easier.
