It depends whether your fig tree adjoins any other tree, a wall, or
wires. I have seen rats go straight up a wall, and they can go along
wires as well as squirrels can. I haven't seen any go across the
underside of a roof, so maybe if you encircle the trunk with a
wide-enough "skirt", you'd keep them from climbing up. Whatever you
put on would have to fit right against the trunk, all around, though,
because rats can go through any holes bigger than a half inch. I've
seen them run up to a door and slip through the small gap at the
bottom without even pausing.
