In fact, this is true for the (closely related) NZ Kauri too. These
shoot up quite quickly in early years and reach almost full height in
100 years, but after that they stop growing up, and start growing out.
The lower branches are dropped quite early in growth (so the timber is
remarkably clear and free from knots) and the trunk builds up into a
massive cylinder, with a crown of heavy branches around the top of the
tree only.
