Hi Sean,
Thank you for this beautiful description - what a wonderful place, that
tree circle!! What a great place to start one's married life, too!
The effect you describe has clear parallels to what are known in England
as "fairy rings", places where a fungus has been behaving in the same
manner as the redwoods, and progressively spreading outwards in a circle
the presence of which shows up as a circle of enhanced grass growth,
from where a single fungus spore started off.
