Re: Another mystery tree

Dear Planters,

Dombeyas have soft fuzzy easily torn leaves and shiny, leathery almost
indestructable leaves. Though only a few are grown in the US, all south
of Sta. Barbara there are many members of this genus.

I grew the one whose flowers look and smell like a Hostess 1/2 round,
pink, coconut covered "pastry(sic((k)))"...can't remember the name but it
succumbed during a cold winter. The SD Zoo on the otherhand is loaded
with the leathery one with red-orange flowers. I think I got mine at
thye long-gone nursery next to Quail--was it Stalling's?

A nice family of tropical trees and shrubs.
