My garden has been stricken with a similar problem this year. I have blamed
it on gophers. (Always a handy scapegoat. . . I blame anything that dies in
my garden on gophers.) Some of the penstemons may have been underwatered,
not sure, but I lost a lot of stuff--suddenly and without warning.
