I've been following the discussion with interest because I've had the same
problem here in Malta. At list 5 shrubs, quite well-established, suddenly
withered and died, each one in the space of a week. When I pulled them up,
it was as if their root system had not really developed, perhaps it was
eaten by a horrible white sluggy-looking thing with a big red head. I dug
around but did not find the creature, although I've seen it before in the
vicinity of plants that died suddenly.
