Phytolacca dioica

I came across references to this plant (also called
Ombú, and is related to the common Pokeweed [P.
americana]) and heard it was being grown here in
California. It's supposed to come from the Pampas, and
grows one of those amazing trunks that form a caudex,
eventually swelling into a large woody base that
resembles a very tropical tree. I also read this trunk
has water storage tissue, and is fire resistant. The
only drawback it seems is the plant is poisonous (but
so are many other common garden plants). It's also a
very fast growing tree, one report says they are
"monsters".

My actual question is this: How frost tolerant is it?

I think it would be a fabulous tree to grow, however.
