Re: What do gardeners think?

Dear Medit-folks,

It has been pointed out to me that my comment may be inflammatory, so let me
clarify:

In my quick read of California, I thought I saw Southern California. In my
specific area (urban LA) we are not a desert, or a tropical climate, but
very close to a dry mediterranean. That's why this list is so interesting to
me, and why I encourage planting in a "climate-appropriate" manner,
including native plants and plants from similar climates.

My comment (that LA is not a desert) was not a comment on the incredibly
diverse climate types throughout California, which include deserts, or in
any way a support or endorsement or comment in anyway upon the appropriation
by Southern Californa of the precious resource of imported water.

I wholeheartedly agree that the concrete lined LA River is a shame, ripe for
rescue and revival, which is (I thought!) another, lengthy discussion. There
are a lot of interesting proposals out there along the lines of restoring
the LA River, sans concrete.
