What do gardeners think?

I have a question about perceptions and misperceptions of the "common" gardener in California.

When you interact with folks who are "common" gardeners (please forgive the terminology but you know what I mean), what kind of climate zone do they think we are in? i.e. I often meet people who think California, especially So Cal, has a tropical climate. What do you hear most often?
