I have been having my mail to recipients using aol.com returned to me
cinsistently with an "ilegal host" error message. I discovered on Google
that this is caused by AOL's policy to block all mail coming in via ISP's
using dynamic IP protocols. Most dialup ISPs use static IP protocols.
Dynamic IPs are often used by spammers to avoid tracing back the source of
their posts, but they are also used by satellite ISP services, such as
Direcway, which I use. The current workaround is to set up a second email
account with Yahoo or Hotmail
This hamfisted approach to control spam will have the effect of causing
small business emailers to abandon AOL in order to reach all of their
customers with assurance.
It will be interesting to see if this effect can be passed through list
servers like Alpine-L, Salvia (Yahoo), MeditPlants, etc. How can someone on
the list complain about not getting posts without checking his mail against
anothers who does not have that incompatability?
