That's right. It seems that AOL is doing things differently than most ISPs
in order to take a bite out of spam. AOL has recently become very
aggressive about shielding their customers from spam. Since a lot of
small-time spammers run mail servers out of their home on their DSL or cable
modem connections, AOL is trying to not accept mail that originates from a
home mail server. AOL therefore takes IP addresses of well-known cable and
DSL companies and blocks them. This will not affect mail that comes from
e-mail user agents in homes sent through the ISP's mail servers, only mail
that is sent from a mail server in a home.
It sounds like there may be a combination of things going on. One is with
AOL protocol itself and another is with what Diane mentions in that folks
are configuring their own email filters.
